Dear Maya,
Your mere presence of grace, honor, and womanhood
Dr. Maya Angelou, you paved the way for my personal words of courage
The profound memory of each scripted phrase, each well-crafted verse
Because of you, I still rise; we can all walk in pride, with no shame or demise.
Since I can remember, I have loved to create lyrics of poesy, often with minimum direction
And then, I discovered the passion, knowledge of a strong phenomenal woman of color
Suddenly, my art had bearing- a passionate sense of core and gratitude
An epiphany of who I am, what I want to represent, and why I want to inspire.
My only regret, I never had the opportunity to stand before you
Ironically, I feel closer to you than ever as you rest peacefully
The nation mourns in your passing, no longer a constant voice of peace, perfection, prosperity
Intangible, caged inspiration that will forever control my soul.
From, I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings and Million Man March Poem to Phenomenal Woman,
we are encouraged to be the best we can despite adversity, tragedy, or prejudice
We will forever honor your request- “clap hands and come together in the meeting ground”
Dr. Maya Angelou, despite the history of pain; And, Still We Rise…
In memory of Dr. Maya Angelou
